If you are anything like me, you love to get your hands on as much valuable information as possible. Chances are, you’ve signed up for countless webinars to increase your knowledge on a hundred things for your business.
Webinars are a great resource for those of us that love to learn. You can get some fantastic webinars out there that teach you anything from how to train your puppy to creating website copy that converts into sales.
Amy Porterfield is one lady who I admire. She is the queen of online courses. You can tell she believes in providing great value in all of her content. Her webinars are awesome. And If you haven’t already checked out Amy’s podcast, try that too!
Here are my tips that I’ve learned on how to get the most out of webinars that you sign up to.
1. PICK THE RIGHT WEBINAR FOR YOU
The problem with the desire to want to learn a lot, is knowing when to stop and avoid a burnout. Webinars are EVERYWHERE so it’s hard to ignore their magnetic pull. Before you know it you’ve got 4 webinars you’ve signed up for within the next month. All of them are topics you want to learn more about to increase your business potential.

BUT ARE YOU SIGNING UP TO TOO MANY?
The first tip for getting the most out of a webinar is by choosing your webinar topic carefully. Analyse what area of your business you need to work on the most. Prioritise your goals. If you’ve only just dipped your toes into a social media platform you really don’t want to be signing up for “How to Investigate Your Twitter Analytics” just yet. Let’s take baby steps.
Search for a webinar on “Twitter for beginners” instead which you are more likely to be able to make actionable steps.
PICK ONE TOPIC AND MASTER IT
If it’s another topic you really find yourself lacking knowledge in, then sign up for that topic… BUT ONLY THAT TOPIC! Signing up to multiple webinars on multiple topics is a sure-fire way to get burnt out and for your business to take a nose dive.
A lot of webinars do like to tempt you in by telling you it is only around for a short period will expire in a short time but most of the time I find that to be untrue. I’ve seen the exact same webinar advertised a month later so it turns out I didn’t miss out after all.
Now, if you really do want to catch that webinar from fear of missing out, then sign up! (Don’t come to me if you can’t find a reply) But think about it, if it’s not at the top of your priority list you should think about leaving that topic for another time.
2. GET QUESTIONS READY
A lot of people jump head first into a webinar without analysing their skill levels. They know they need to improve overall but they don’t really know what it is they want to take away from the webinar they have signed up for. They end up with a bunch of knowledge that they may come back to at a later date… but maybe not.
A LOT OF WEBINARS ARE NOT LIVE
I think we all know that some webinars are promoted as being “LIVE” but they are a replay. This is logical thinking when you sign up to a webinar. It’s unlikely that the person hosting the webinar is going to be LIVE every other hour for the next 72 hours. They were probably recorded live so it’s not all bad.
I have been part of a LIVE webinar before. I was able to type a comment and it actually got read aloud. That’s only happened once.
WHAT IS IT THAT YOU WANT TO LEARN FROM THIS WEBINAR?
Keep an eye on these questions as you are going through the webinar content. It’s easy to get side tracked. These webinars are VALUE PACKED so you want to make sure that your question gets answered.
YOU CAN STILL USE THESE QUESTIONS TO AID YOUR LEARNING
Webinar hosts want to help you, so if you think you may be listening to a recording and your questions don’t get answered during the webinar, you can still reply to your webinar email with your questions and hopefully get a response from your host!
3. REMOVE YOUR DISTRACTIONS
I’m guilty of this. I always have my phone by my side and it’s constantly buzzing with updates on what’s happening with email, social media, messages and phone calls. Not to mention distractions from my dog, Buster, who always seems to want attention when I’m in the middle of something important. Then I’ve got auto updates from Facebook and Twitter on my browser every time something significant (or not) happens on those platforms.
Social media is important to my business; I make my money from constantly being in the know with what’s going on there. But I definitely do not need all of that distracting me when I’m learning something new.
YOU CAN’T PAUSE WEBINARS SO REMOVE YOUR DISTRACTIONS AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.
My tip is to install a handy extension on your browser that can block these pesky time-sucking sites for the amount of time you’ll be spending on the webinar. I really like Stay Focused extension and use the “Nuclear Option” regularly. You add a number of sites to a list and Stay focused will block them for a set time. Try and choose a time when everyone is out of the house or let people know you will be unavailable at this time. Ask a loved one to look after the kiddos until you are done. Perhaps even turn your phone off, or put it in another room. Phone call interruptions may cause you to miss some valuable content.
Some webinars do offer replays so if you do get distracted and want to catch up, try and remember the time you missed so that you can jump to this in the replay.
4. TAKE NOTES BUT NOT IN THE WAY YOU THINK
I used to have a pen and pad ready for every webinar and would be constantly scribbling down as much information I could so that I didn’t forget anything.
The problem with that is, when your head is down while you are writing you could be missing valuable slides. Sometimes they come and go quite fast and it’s likely you won’t have time to note down everything.
Plus, what happens if you note all of this great stuff down, forget where you noted it down and spend the next few weeks trying to find it? (Been there, done that)
We want to be as productive as possible so if you were to take ONE tip away from this article it’s this one.
USE A LIST BUILDER APP LIKE ASANA
I do love old school pen and pad and I still have countless scribbles on notepads with ideas to build my biz. But I find I get the most out of webinars when I don’t manually take notes.
I split my desktop screen so that I have the webinar on one side and Asana open on the other and I make a list, like this.
The cool thing about this, is your action steps are already electronic. You can be anywhere and log into this list and you won’t lose it!
Tip if you have a Virtual Assistant: Asana is a great tool to share information with your VA.
5. USE A SNAPSHOT OR SNIPPING TOOL TO CAPTURE THE BEST INFORMATION
I use this tool to further increase my reference back to the webinar information at a later date.
When you see a big slide has appeared and you want to remember that WORD FOR WORD, use the Snipping Tool. I have a windows PC so the tool I use has an icon like this.
CAPTURE A SCREENSHOT OF THE WEBINAR TO REFER TO LATER
While I don’t use this very often, it is handy when I want to capture something truly special. Once you take your snippet you can save it as a file name such as “Snip1” (something quick to type so you don’t miss anything else valuable!)
You can even then go as far as to add the snip to your Asana checklist to ensure it all stays in the same place
6. TRY AND STAY UNTIL THE VERY END!
I know the temptation is to leave the webinar when the host starts to get to their salesy stuff. It’s their chance to promote content in return for the valuable information they have just given you. Who can blame em? I know I’d do it!
YOU CAN GET REALLY GOOD INFORMATION FROM THE Q&A AT THE END
I mentioned earlier that you may be listening to a recording of a webinar that was once LIVE. At some point there were still people that asked questions and even if your particular question wasn’t answered in the webinar chances are it will come up within the Q&A section.
I’ve managed to get some great tips from the end of a webinar that I would have otherwise lost if I had bailed out early.
7. CONCLUDE THE WEBINAR STRAIGHT AFTER IT ENDS & TAKE ACTION!
Because webinars do take quite a long time and there is SO MUCH VALUABLE INFORMATION in there it may be tempting to get back to something that’s making you money RIGHT NOW. But let’s not forget why you signed up for this webinar in the first place.
You came to learn, so quickly take a look back at the notes you’ve made during the webinar. Think about the topics individually and decide what it is you are doing to take action on immediately.
If you have been using Asana you can set a date that you want to complete these steps by and assign different tasks to your team members so that you know you are all moving forward on this.
Whatever you do, make sure you use what you have learned and apply the good stuff to your business. Don’t forget about it!
